Figure showing different cell populations in the liver and the transcriptional regulation in hepatocytes: Human liver is divided into four lobes, and each lobe contains many hepatic lobules. Each hepatic lobule contains different types of epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and immune cells. Hepatocyte is a specialized parenchymal epithelial cell that can produce several different blood proteins, clotting factors and metabolic enzymes, etc. The gene transcription in hepatocytes is influenced by external stimuli, such as endocrine hormones, and metabolites from other metabolically active organs, food intake, and the day/night cycle.
