Table 2.

Current spectrum of indications for cardiac MRI

Clinical indication Gained knowledge
Ischemic cardiomyopathy Morphological and functional evaluation, detection of post-ischemic complication, and myocardial viability assessment in a CABG candidate
Non-ischemic cardiomyopathy Morphological and functional assessment, detection of a possible underlying pathological substrate and potential classification of the involved cardiomyopathy, as well as prognostic factors for events
Myocardial ischemia Detection of hemodynamic significance of coronary artery disease
Heart failure Morphological and functional assessment, detection of possible underlying pathological substrate and thrombus, and evaluation of potential etiology
Valvular heart disease Visualization and quantification of transvalvular flow, and evaluation of functional repercussion on and remodeling of the cardiac chambers
Congenital heart disease Knowledge about cardiac anatomy and suspected defects. Pre-operative guidance (including shunt fraction determination in atrial and septal defects) and long-term follow-up into adulthood
