HIF increases the expression of a majority of genes involved in glucose import, glycolysis, and the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). Additionally, HIF increases expression of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK), which inhibits pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) activity subsequently reducing glucose entry into the mitochondria.
