The process of Wnt signal transduction on the inactive state. Without the Wnt ligand, intracellular phosphorylation of β-catenin is activated by kinases CKI and GSK-3β under the action of the skeleton proteins Axin and APC. After phosphorylation, β -catenin combines with β-TRCP, which leads to its ubiquitination and degradation. Due to the low level of β-catenin in the nucleus, the transcription inhibitor Groucho can prevent the transcription of the Wnt target gene.
