Reaction progress of the d‐erythrose and the formation of d‐erythrulose, rac‐erythrulose, rac‐tetroses, d‐threose, diastereomeric octuloses and organic acids (formate, glycolate and glycerate) as determined by NMR data shown in Figure 2. This observation is consistent with DFT calculations. The difference in the free energies of reaction for erythrulose undergoing a keto‐aldo migration to form either threose or erythrose is only 0.71 kcal/mol.
