RG-I is a polysaccharide with a [4)-α-d-GalA-(1,2)-α-l-Rha-(1,] disaccharide repeat backbone. The curved arrow represents the nucleophilic attack of an acceptor oligosaccharide with a non-reducing end Rha to the anomeric carbon of UDP-GalA. This putative transfer of a GalA monosaccharide to elongate the RG-I acceptor with retention of stereochemistry is referred to here as RG-I:GalAT activity.
