In wild-type Drosophila (top), CBP/p300 (Nejire) and Gcn5 regulate the expression of distinct gene sets and catalyze H3K18ac/H3K27ac and H3K9ac, respectively. When wild-type Nejire and Gcn5 are replaced with catalytically dead (CD) mutants, histone acetylation is lost from their target genes; however, these genes still become activated during ZGA. By contrast, when Nejire and Gcn5 protein is eliminated by RNAi (bottom), target genes fail to activate.
