Community-scale inference of facilitation and competition. (A) Facilitation. Metabolic interaction potential was calculated as the difference between the minimal number of metabolites required for the growth of all MAGs in a community without interspecific interactions and that with interactions. (B) Competition. Metabolic resource overlap was estimated as the mean proportion of shared nutritional requirements (metabolites) in pairs of MAGs within a community (Zelezniak et al., 2015).
