Attitude of acceptance:
  • Acceptance of the person as he/she is.

  • Acceptance of her ambivalence

  • Non-judgment of the person

  • Use of reflective listening (desire to understand the patient's/carer's points of view)

  • Create and amplify a discrepancy between the consequences of the current behavior and the most important objectives to be achieved.

  • Analyze the consequences of current behavior in the medium-long term, which prevent the achievement of personal goals.

  • Let the patient and/or carer, if desired, express the reasons for wanting to change.

  • Not convincing the patient/ carer that he/she has a problem and needs to change it when he/she may not want to.

  • Avoid arguing, as they usually generate more resistances.

  • If resistances appear, it is up to the HCP/pediatrician to change the strategy to be used.

  • Increase the patient's/ carer's personal belief in performing a given behavior (“I can do it”, “I can get it”, “What's the harm in trying”?)

  • Emphasize the need for personal responsibility for change.

  • Identification of resistance

  • Avoid arguing

  • New points of view are suggested, not imposed.
