Recommended evaluation in children and adolescents with hypertension.

Population Assessment of
All children and adolescents with elevated blood pressure (Baseline evaluation)
  • – Blood count and morphology

  • – Ions, including Ca and P

  • – Blood gas analysis

  • – Serum creatinine, serum uric acid, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, HbA1C, thyroid hormones

  • – Urinalysis with spot albumin-to-creatinine ratio

  • – Renal and abdominal ultrasound

Children and adolescents with
  • – ≥ stage 2 HTN,

  • – age <10 years,

  • – Suspected secondary or monogenic hypertension

(Usually done in referral centers)
  • – Renin and aldosterone concentrations

  • – Steroid hormones metabolism

  • – Serum concentrations of meta- and normetanephrine or excretion of catecholamines and their metabolites

  • – Molecular investigations in suspected monogenic HTN

  • – Renal doppler ultrasound
