Fig. 3 — The first step towards a factual approach is to measure one’s own performance and to make data available within the institution. International, open-access data presentation may help for collaboration and benchmarking improving learning and decision-making. In future, algorithms and artificial intelligence will play an increasing role for individualized decision-making, taking into account routine data and new variables. In the end, a factual approach may help to balance effective sepsis care and antimicrobial stewardship.
