Ethanol-induced Fgf21 in Tgr5 −/− mice. Chronic + binge ethanol typically induces steatosis and liver damage. In Tgr5 −/− mice, ethanol increased Fgf21, which exerts metabolic effects in the liver, adipose tissue, and elsewhere and is implicated in mediating preference for ethanol and carbohydrate consumption. This may contribute to Fgf21-induced alterations in leptin sensitivity and downstream leptin signaling in Tgr5 −/− mice. Figure created with Biorender.com.
