Definitions of terms as used in this study.

Term Definition
PLLV Viral loads between ≥20 and 999 copies/ml on at least two consecutive measures
Virologic failure (VF) Viral loads ≥ 1000 copies/ml
Viral blips Viral load consistently ≤50 copies/ml with one viral load measurement ≥ 200-999 copies/ml
Nondetectable VL Viral loads < 20 copies/ml
Baseline VL The first viral load test
Of importance to note is that viral load tests before the commencement of ART are only done on HIV-positive pregnant mothers who test positive while pregnant or who become pregnant when already enrolled for ART care and their children after birth. Other patients who test HIV positive have to take ARVs for six months before their viral load is tested
