Effect of S. aureus growth phase and agr on adherence. Approximately 105 EC were incubated for 2 h with S. aureus cells at multiplicities of infection ranging from 10 to 10,000 CFU per cell. Strain Newman and the agr mutant ALC355 were grown to the exponential or stationary growth phase. The percent adherence was expressed as 100 × (CFU of adherent bacteria/CFU of inoculated bacteria).
