Source-sink hypothesis. Top: During interictal periods, epileptogenic nodes (shaded red region) are sinks that are strongly inhibited (influenced) by neighbouring regions (sources) to prevent seizures. Bottom: During ictal periods, however, epileptogenic nodes become sources as they work together as a tightly coupled group to initiate and spread epileptogenic activity to other regions of the brain.
