Study name Comparison of occlusal settling, patient compliance and retention ability between Hawley’s and Van Der Linden retainers: a randomized controlled trial
Methods Study design: single‐centre, double‐blinded (participant and outcomes assessor), 2‐armed, parallel, randomised, active control trial

Duration of the follow‐up: at time of retainer delivery (T0), 3 months of retention (T1) and 6 months of retention (T2)
Inclusion criteria
  • Male or female from 18‐40 years

  • Gave consent for the proposed study

  • Had undergone fixed orthodontic treatment

  • Had completed orthodontic treatment and were in retention phase of treatment

  • Systemically healthy


Exclusion criteria
  • Patients with craniofacial or dentofacial syndromes

  • Patients with diabetes

  • Patients having habit of smoking

  • Patients who are suffering from periodontal disorder

  • Non‐compliant patients

Participants The study aims to enrol and randomise 80 participants.
Interventions
  • Group A (experimental): Van der Linden retainer

  • Group B (active control): Hawley retainer

Outcomes Primary outcome
  • Occlusal settling


Secondary outcomes
  • Stability ‐ LII (LII), intercanine width (ICW) and intermolar width (IMW)

  • Patient compliance
