Study name Comparison of two different designs of fixed retainers for periodontal health of anterior teeth and their clinical efficacy
Methods Study design: double‐blinded (participant and outcome assessor), 2‐armed, parallel, randomised, active‐control trial
Setting: conducted in a university and hospital settling
Country: India
Duration of follow‐up: 1, 2, 3 and 4 months
Inclusion criteria 
  • Male or female from 10‐50 years

  • No missing mandibular incisors

  • No restorations on the mandibular incisors that might affect retainer bonding on lingual enamel surfaces

  • No morphologic crown anomalies

  • Well aligned incisors after orthodontic treatment completion will be included


Exclusion criteria 
  • A professional dental cleaning within the last 4 months

  • A history of diabetes

  • A habit of smoking

  • Pre‐existing periodontal disease

  • Post‐orthodontic periodontal disease

  • Antibiotic prophylaxis prior to periodontal data collection, current use of antibiotics

  • Pregnancy

Participants The study aims to enrol and randomise 30 participants.
Interventions
  • Group A: wave‐type retainer. Wave retainer from canine of left side in mandible to canine on right side of arch

  • Group B: straight twisted wire bonded lingual retainer. Straight retainer from canine of left side in mandible to canine on right side of arch

Outcomes Primary outcomes
  • Stability ‐ LII


Secondary outcomes (periodontal parameters)
  • Plaque Index

  • Gingival pocket probing depths

  • Gingival recession

  • Bleeding on probing

  • Oral hygiene ‐ questionnaire for frequency of brushing, flossing, ease of flossing and comfort of retainers
