Aim To Collaboratively Involve Patient as Research Partners at all Stages of the Research to Ensure Consumer Perspectives are Incorporated.
Methods Consumers were recruited through direct email contact with the local Health Service Consumer Advisory Group and Health Consumers Queensland. The email stated the research aim and expected role of the consumer researcher.
Training was integrated into the team meeting and provided as needed. Both consumers have received formal health consumer training previously.
One consumer contributed to all stages of the research study, and the other inputted into the analysis, write-up.
Study results Consumer involvement contributed to by interpreting results and reviewing the draft article.
Discussion and conclusion Consumers contributed important perspectives to the language and provided important insights into the analysis. The consumers ask questions and provide feedback at each step, thus providing a valuable lens to the process and content.
Reflections
  • A broader group of health consumers may be contacted for future research projects.

  • Due to the long standing relationships between the consumers and lead researcher, the flow of the research process was simple.

  • Quote from consumer—“I think this point cannot be emphasised enough, because we’ve done multiple things together, and share a common vision, it helps the process a lot. It is not transactional. The antennae of consumers is very strong, and they know very quickly if the relationship is one based on mutual respect for each other’s expertise and knowledge.”

  • Unfortunately, due to the lead researcher ill health the project was held up for many months. However, this did not seem to impact the consumer-researcher relationship and productivity and ongoing relationship of the team.
