The uncertainty interval surrounding each point estimate represents the 25th and 75th percentiles of the empirical frequency distribution of the estimate for each infection. The number of prevalent infections was calculated by multiplying the per-capita prevalence estimates by the American Community Survey full population estimates for 2018. Total estimates are not the sum of individual estimates but rather descriptions of multiple distributions that have been combined.
