Coef., coefficient; Est., estimate, Var., variance components; SES, socio-economic status.

The variance of the level-1 residual (e tij ) was estimated to be 1·08 in all models. The variance of the level-2 residual of intercepts (r 0ij ) was 0·20 in Models I and II and 0·14 in Model III. The variance of the level-2 residual of slopes for period (r 1ij ) was 0·20 in Models I and II and 0·17 in Model III.
