Effect of anti-CD20 therapies on GI mucosal microenvironment. The deleterious effect of anti-CD20 therapies could be explained by the depletion of the B-cell compartment because B cells in the GI mucosa may act as regulatory with a potential protective effect. B cells regulate cellular production of TNFα in colonic inflammation, produce anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10, and have an adjuvant effect on regulatory T cell (Treg) function.
