The supernatant of liquid-shake cultures of A. fumigatus contains FC during germination and hyphal growth under iron sufficiency and iron limitation, while TAFC is secreted exclusively during iron limitation starting in the hyphal stage. A. fumigatus WT was cultured as described in Fig. 3. After the respective time points, the supernatants were collected by filtration-mediated separation of the mycelia. Subsequently, siderophores were enriched by chromatography with Amberlite XAD-16N resin and elution with methanol followed by mass spectrometric analysis. The analysis shows the mean of three replicates ± SD. n.d., no siderophores detected.
