Effect of AR42 on motor neuron loss in the lumbar spinal cords of SMNΔ7 SMA mice. SMNΔ7 SMA mice (n = 3/group) were treated with either AR42 or vehicle from PND04 until PND11. The number of Cresyl violet-positive, ventral motor neurons were counted in every 12th section of lumbar spinal cords of AR42-treated SMNΔ7 SMA mice (circles), vehicle-treated SMNΔ7 SMA mice (squares) or age-matched non-SMA littermates (triangles). AR42 increased lumbar spinal motor neuron counts in SMNΔ7 SMA mice to levels similar to those in nonSMA littermates. The data are presented as mean ± standard error with the average motor neuron counts/section shown for each individual mouse. The asterisk (*) denotes a statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05; one-way ANOVA with Bonferonni post hoc test) difference when compared to vehicle-treated SMNΔ7 SMA mice.
