bSpecialties were categorized as low, middle, and high competitiveness based on the percentage of US senior MD graduates matching into the specialty sorted by percentage terciles according to the American Association of Medical Colleges 2021 Report on Residents. ‘Low’ included family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, pathology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and radiation oncology. ‘Moderately’ included anesthesiology, child neurology, emergency medicine, medical genetics, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, and general surgery. ‘High’ included child/adolescent psychiatry, dermatology, internal medicine-pediatrics, neurological surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, and vascular surgery. The reference for each level of competitiveness is noncongruence between the specialty of SC and matched SC for students who completed an SC project in the competitiveness category.
