Glycocalyx senses fluid shear stress in the vascular lumen, and L-arginine enters endothelial cells through the L-arginine channel (Inline graphic) and generates NO under the catalysis of endothelial no synthase (eNOS), NO upregulates soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) activity, catalyzes guanosine triphosphate (cGTP) to generate cyclic guanosine phosphate (cGMP) to induce stretching within smooth muscle cells, dilating blood vessels and reducing the stretching of shear stress.
