Abdominal esophagus The abdominal esophagus can be seen between the left lobe of the liver and aorta by aiming the probe up toward the upper left epigastrium (a). This is the starting point of the upper GI tract scan. The short axis of the esophagus can be seen as a ring-like structure on axial scanning with the probe aimed up toward the epigastrium (b)
