The regulatory mechanism of the transcription factor NAC1 and the citrate transporter ALMT1 during citrate accumulation in fruit. During the development of ‘Hayward’, the expression level of the transcription factor AdNAC1 is higher which activates the transcription of the citrate transporter AdALMT1, thereby increasing the citrate accumulation. Lower expression levels of AcNAC1 and AcALMT1 result in lower citrate accumulation during the development of ‘Hongyang’. After mutagenesis of AcNAC1 by CRISPR‐Cas9, acnac1 lines have a dramatic decline in expression of AcALMT1 and citrate accumulation.
