(a) Illustration of the orientation identification task. Compound feature-defined and density-defined boundaries having varying degrees of visibility were presented with a left-oblique or right-oblique orientation.

(b) Psychometric functions for observers segmenting compound feature-defined boundaries (blue symbols + curves), compound density-defined boundaries (red symbols + curves), and RMS-equated compound density-defined boundaries (magenta symbols + curves). Here the constituent single-micropattern density boundaries were comprised of ON- and OFF-center DOG functions (Fig 2b).

(c) Same as (b) but for compound feature- and density-defined compound boundaries comprised of horizontal (H) and vertical (V) Gabor micropatterns (Fig. 2c).
