Cell density and development. DZ2 was grown and prepared for development as described in Materials and Methods. Cells were resuspended in MMC buffer at 4 × 10⁹ or at 4 × 10⁸/ml. Five-microliter aliquots were spotted onto MMC agar plates or MMC agar plates containing ampicillin at 100 μg/ml. The cell density/mm² was calculated based upon an average surface area of 19.6 mm² for each spot of cells. The plates were incubated at 28°C for 6 days prior to photography. Bars = 1 mm.
