Reference gait events were estimated in two steps. (a) First, foot-worn IMU data were used to segment the region of interest, i.e., individual strides. Ref. [33] was applied to determine stride borders, followed by manual quality control. (b,c) Within each region of interest, gait events (initial contact–IC, terminal contact–TC) were estimated using the optical motion capture (OMC) system and the coordinate-based algorithm by Zeni et al.
