Figure 3: — Adiponectin controls metabolic homeostasis via a variety of mechanisms. In addition to the insulin-sensitizing effect, adiponectin plays a critical role in regulating energy balance and inflammation. As a starvation signal, adiponectin promotes food intake and suppresses cold-induced thermogenesis, leading to positive energy balance and enhanced adipogenesis. This may interpret in part the obesogenic effect of adiponectin and potential side effects of adiponectin-based therapeutics.
