Overview of respiratory pathogens leading to pneumonia. Bacterial pneumonia can be divided into community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) according to the pathogen that causes it. Viral pathogens can lead to both CAP and HAP. Fungal pneumonia is predominantly hospital-acquired (HAP). Figure shows a selection of pathogens, not a complete list.
