Divergence within E1 and E2a
| Animal | Protein | No. of nt analyzed | No. of nt changes | Rate of variation (10−3)b | No. of aa analyzed | No. of aa changes | aa/nt (%)c |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| x174 | E1 | 576 | 10 | 2.2 | 192 | 4 | 40 |
| E2 | 1,089 | 14 | 1.6 | 363 | 4 | 29 | |

| E2 | 1,089 | 19 | 2.4 | 363 | 4 | 21 | |
| HVR-1 | 90 | 0 | 0 | 30 | 0 | 0 |
The E1 and E2 regions analyzed spanned aa 192 to 383 (576 nucleotides [nt]) and an 384 to 746 (1,089 nucleotides), respectively. The HVR-1 region spanned aa 384 to 413 (90 nucleotides). The duration of time between the collection of serum samples was 7.9 years for x174 and 7.4 years for x304.
The rate of variation was calculated as the number of nucleotide changes/site/years between temporally spaced bleeds.
The percentage of nucleotide changes resulting in amino acid changes.
