The items directly correspond to 14 of the 17 symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV). The IES-R contains seven additional items related to the hyperarousal symptoms of PTSD.
