Table describes the Akaike information criterion and Bayesian information criterion values of the model building procedures for the effect of relative pubertal timing on depressive symptoms and social anxiety symptoms. Null model contains the random intercept for school class, without fixed effects. In step 1, relative pubertal maturation is added as a fixed effect (absolute pubertal maturation in parallel models). In step 2, the interaction relative pubertal maturation and sex was added as fixed effect (with lower order terms). In step 3, the interaction between relative pubertal maturation, sex and perceived popularity and all lower order terms were added. In step 4, the random slope of relative pubertal maturation on level of school class was added. The AIC and BIC values for the model building process for the effect of absolute pubertal timing in brackets. Final models are printed in bold
