The first column labels which amino acids can be classified as polar/hydrophilic Inline graphic and nonpolar/hydrophobic Inline graphic according to the weights of our RBMs. The second column shows the textbook classification of amino acids.43 According to RBMs, Tyr behaves as a nonpolar amino acid, Pro behaves mostly as a polar one Inline graphic, and Ala is slightly Inline graphic only in β-sheets. Gly is neither clearly Inline graphic nor Inline graphic. The color of each amino acid symbol in the last column (and the offset) follows the subgrouping we introduce based on the weights learned by the RBMs applied to α-helices.
