Construct Components and Definitions Examples
Values + belief systems
  • Ideology + values of White supremacy = hegemonic ideological system that values, protects, and normalizes Whiteness and White power; places greater value on White lives, compared with racially minoritized lives, which are viewed as “disposable”

Macro/fundamental concept does not support specific examples
  • Racialization = how we socially construct (define and delineate) racial and ethnic groupings, based on phenotypic markers, such as skin color, hair texture, facial features

  • Stigmatization = how socially constructed racial groups undergo differential labeling, stereotyping, separation, status loss, and discrimination, all within the context of a power structure

Shared social consciousness
  • Collective racial prejudice = shared attitudes, biases, and prejudice about different racial groups and racial issues that operate above the minds of individuals

  • Collective racial prejudice = aggregate, population‐levels of racial bias and prejudice

  • Racial frames = shared frameworks through which we collectively interpret information, assign meaning, and make decisions (component of our collective consciousness)

  • White racial frame = the worldview of White people, which is used to rationalize White privilege and power

  • Color‐blind racial frame = abstract notions of meritocracy, individualism, and equal opportunity (i.e., “abstract liberalism”); attributing racial inequities to natural, biologic, or cultural differences; and a minimization of racism as a feature of the past; upholds the White racial frame

Cultural expressions How we “see” and “hear” the ideologies of White superiority in society, through: Racially charged political rhetoric, confederate flags and monuments, racial stereotypes, degradation; cultural stereotypes expressed in music, TV, film, news, fashion, and social media
  • Language + symbols

  • Media portrayals
