RT-PCR detection of LAC virus RNA in CNS tissues of a patient from 1960. Total cellular RNA extracted from CNS tissues was subjected to RT-PCR with primers specific for LAC virus genomic and replicative forms of RNA. V+ and V− are control reaction mixtures containing RNA extracted from BHK-21 cells inoculated with LAC virus (V+) or from noninfected BHK-21 cells (V−). Lane groups 1 through 7 contain seven different tissue samples from CNS of patient from 1960. Each group contains material from RT-PCR using primers specific for viral genomic (v), mRNA, or vcRNA.
