Exclusion criteria for participants.

  1. Relevant, uncorrected vision disorder

  1. Evidence of cognitive impairment (ACE-III score of ≤86)

  1. Relevant psychiatric or neurological pre-existing condition (e.g., major depression, focal damage of the brain due to operation or stroke, epilepsy)

  1. Contraindications for MRI (e.g., cardiac pacemaker, non-removable metal parts in/at the body, claustrophobia)

  1. Permanent medication with sedating substances

  1. Loss of capacity of consent

  1. Relevant, physical impairment

  1. Stadium 3 and 4 cardiac diseases

  1. Relevant systemic disease: cancer, severe kidney or liver disease, type 1 or 2 diabetes, diseases with intrinsic inflammation (e.g., arthritis, Crohn’s disease, asthma, chronic infections)

  1. Treatments that influence glucose or microbiome composition: antidiabetics, antibiotics, immune suppressants, etc.

  1. Chronic obstipation or diarrhea

  1. Symptoms of clinical infection during the last month

  1. Excessive alcohol/drug consumption

  1. Severe eating disorder

  1. Known disruption of iron balance

  1. Chronic treatment with steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

  1. Treatment with proton pump inhibitors
