Based on the authors’ concept, this modified diagram (adapted from Fig. 2) proposes that a SIF (subchondral insufficiency fracture) has the potential to heal provided that there is continuity between the area located between the fracture plane and the articular surface and the rest of the medullary epiphyseal space. Conversely, a SIF-ON would occur in case this continuity is lost
