Effectiveness factor, corresponding to the ratio of observed rate (macrokinetics) and microkinetic rate, in case of CO oxidation over npAu at 30 °C as a function of the characteristic length of the catalyst particle actually used. When breaking up monolithic disc-shaped npAu samples exhibiting diameters (several mm), which are much larger than their thickness (a few 100 microns), – a sample type often employed in catalytic studies on npAu—into smaller platelets with diameters and thicknesses in the range of a few 200 microns, the conversion can be pushed to almost 100% of the maximum rate, reflecting the genuine catalytic potential of the material in the absence of mass transport limitations
