Session structure
  • Session 1: Review the individual with psychosis’s current treatment status, wellbeing, treatment history, and relationship with the participant. Answer questions and provide psychoeducation as needed. Inquire about impact of illness on participant. Teach participant about the concept of motivational interviewing (MI) and the “spirit” of MI.

  • Session 2: Teach and practice reflections and open-ended questions

  • Session 3: Review reflections and open-ended questions; teach and practice raising difficult topics and asking permission before giving advice

  • Sessions 4–5: Review attempts to use skills, plan for upcoming conversations, and/or devote time to in-session practice
