Participants | Adult Syrian refugees with symptoms of psychological distress and problems in daily life Inclusion criteria: a. Syrian displaced person living in Egypt; b. Arabic‐speaking; c. minimum age 18 years; d. K10 score > 15 and WHODAS 2.0 score > 16; e. access to a smartphone (iOS or Android) or web‐browser; f. internet access. Exclusion criteria: a. serious suicidal thoughts or plan Stated purpose: to evaluate the effects of Step‐by‐Step on mental health and the use of health services |
Interventions |
Intervention: TAU + Step‐by‐Step Step‐by‐Step is a smartphone‐ and internet‐based self‐help programme with an introduction session (15 minutes) and 5 weekly sessions (each 30 minutes), a digital mood diary, contact‐on‐demand by trained and supervised non‐specialist, Syrian research assistants (“e‐helpers”) and information on treatment‐as‐usual (TAU) in Egypt. Participants in this group can make use of other care services in parallel. Control: TAU + information (access to information about their symptoms, and on how to get help when experiencing difficult emotions or problems. Participants receive basic psychoeducation and information on treatment‐as‐usual (TAU) in Egypt. Participants in this group can make use of other care services in parallel). |
