Psychometric functions for grating-plaid pairs. (A) Target grating and reference plaid. The plaid was symmetrical and had a fixed disparity with a direction of 60°. The grating had an orientation of 45° (shown here) or 90° and a disparity that varied under control of a constant-stimulus procedure. Stimuli were presented for 150 ms in trials blocked by conditions. (B) Psychometric functions for two observers; θ gives the grating orientation; the plaid was identical for the two grating orientations. Vertical arrows point to grating disparity values that yielded a perceived depth match with the plaid. Unblocked conditions, including multiple plaid disparities presented in random order, produced similar data. (From Farell et al., 2009.)
