Roles of adipsin in the adipocyte–breast cancer stem cell (CSC) interactions. Adipokine adipsin is a complement factor indispensable for the activation of an alternative pathway, in which C3 is cleaved to generate C3b and anaphylatoxin C3a. Adipsin also induces the secretion of another adipokine hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in an autocrine regulatory manner. Both C3a and HGF function as activators of the CSC properties in breast cancer.
