Pcdh19E48X mice possess increased numbers of lateral glomeruli at P13
(A) Control mice display the canonical single medial (black arrowhead) and lateral (white arrowhead) glomerulus within the bulb.
(B) In mutants, there were more frequent examples of lateral glomeruli with two or rarely three (white arrowheads) lateral projections. We also found examples of medial glomeruli with multiple projections (black arrowheads). On occasion, examples of stray projections (black arrow) were also seen, although these smaller projections were not counted as additional glomeruli.
(C) Male control mice almost exclusively (92%) had a single glomerulus at the lateral position, with an occasional secondary projection much smaller than the primary projection (white arrowhead).
(D) Male mutant with two glomeruli on the lateral surface of approximately equal size (white arrowheads).
(E) Lateral glomeruli were increased in number for both male and female mutants.
(F) Medial glomeruli numbers were not significantly different from control. Fisher’s exact test with Bonferroni correction. Scale bar: 500 μm (A and B) or 200 μm (C and D). ∗p < 0.05, ∗∗∗p < 0.005. n=22 (M cntrl), 19 (M mut), 18 (F mut). and 19 (F het).
