PspA families were assigned to the various pneumococcal isolates on the basis of reactivity with polyclonal rabbit antisera raised against prototypical family 1 and family 2 PspAs.
PCR was used to confirm the PspA family for PspAs from pneumococcal strains that reacted equally well with antisera raised against prototypical family 1 and family 2 PspAs. ND, not determined.
