Figure 1

The sulfoglycolytic Embden−Meyerhof−Parnas (sulfo-EMP) pathway enables the catabolism of sulfoquinovosyl glycerol (SQGro) and sulfoquinovose (SQ) to 2,3-dihydroxypropanesulfonate (DHPS) (reductive pathway) or sulfolactate (SL) (oxidative pathway). Class I and class II 6-deoxy-6-sulfofructose-1-phosphate (SFP) aldolases catalyze the scission of the C3-C4 bond to give dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) and sulfolactaldehyde (SLA). SF, sulfofructose; SFP, SF-1-phosphate.
