BECs were treated with the indicated phenolic compounds or DMSO alone for 1 h prior to infection with (A and B) AAEC185/pRI203, (C and D) S. flexneri (E and F), or S. Typhimurium. Monolayers were then incubated for 2 h in the continued presence of the compounds, followed by a 2-h incubation in the presence of gentamicin. Graphs show mean values of (A, C, E) cell-associated and (B, D, F) gentamicin-protected, intracellular bacteria from at least 3 independent experiments performed in triplicate. Data are expressed relative to DMSO-treated controls. P values were calculated using Student’s t tests.
