Learning curves for 18 residents interpreting ankle x-rays over time with accuracy plotted on the Y-axis as a representation of achievement. The first graph is the average learning curve of the residents, and the second includes the 95% confidence interval. Neither graph conveys the information of plotting all individual curves overlaid in the third graph. There are significant interpretations only glimpsed from the third graph regarding concepts such as competency and remediation. The simple averaged graph could lead the interpreter to very different conclusions.
